St. Anthony's Defeats St. John's 3-0

by Kevin McCrudden

South Huntington ~ St. Anthony's boys soccer defeated St. John's 3-0 this evening at Cy donnelly field in South Huntington.

The first half was all the Friars as they dominated play.  Coach Don Carrao stated that the team had one of their best outings of the season on Friday against Archbishop Curley and kept the momentum coming into the St. John's game.  St. Anthony's scored 2 goals in the first half off of long throw ins, which ironically used to be a strong suit for St. John's in their "glory days."

St. John's came out with a different formation in the second half and applied more pressure on St. Anthony's.  The Cougars who had a huge crowd supporting them seemed to be a different team in the second half and missed several opportunities, including one play where Ian Stewart, a senior, hit the post on one side of the Friars net, a scramble ensued and the Cougars hit the post on the other side of the net.  Only to walk away empty handed.

St. John's Fans were out in Force

Coach Carrao stated that the team really wanted this game, because they felt they let the fiorst game against the Cougars slip away.  they had a 2-0 first hald lead, but came away with a 2-2 draw.  The Friars finish up the season with Archbishop Molloy, Kellenberg and a showdown with Chaminade next Tuesday before the playoffs begin.

First year Coach Nick Gallagher at St. John's faces his brother Coach Mike Gallagher this Thursday at Chaminade.  Asked if he was going to get one back from his brother after losing 3-0 at Chaminade earlier in the season, Coach Galagher laughed.  The Cougars are now 7-3-2 on the season and close out with chaminade on Thursday at home, Kellenberg and St. Mary's before the playoffs.
