NYCFC mini-pitch Astoria

By Sean McCaffery, October 18, 2017

We attended the dedications at of 2 out of the 5 mini-pitches yesterday, the first being in Manhatten the other, Astoria. These are former baskeball courts that were underused, one at a school the Astoria one in a city park under the Triboro Bridge, across the street from historical Astoria Park. Painted NYCFC blue with adidas, US Soccer Foundation, Ethiad, and NYC logos as well this is a great repurpose of these areas. The spaces being redone are some of the 50 that NYCFC will have opening in the next in 5 years, quite the undertaking and a wonderful thing to do for underutilized space. This effort is seperate and unique from the one with MLS to create 20 league wide and even more commendable in light of that, over double what the league aspires to achive. There is video up of interviews at the Astoria location with Florence Koulouris, Community Board 1 Queens District Manager and Richard Khuzami, President of Old Astoria Neighborhood Association (OANA) on the fb page of SLIM, along with additional photos coming of both dedications.
