California is the most world cup obsessed state in America, a new study reveals.
The research, carried out by ticket website Seat Compare, examined Google Trends data of search terms frequently used by people interested in the soccer world cup. These terms were then combined to give each American state a 'total world cup soccer search score' to discover which states have been the most interested in soccer in the past 7 days.
The study revealed that California is the state searching most about the competition. With a total search score of 821, California topped the list for its population, having the highest search levels for many terms and including:Fifa World Cup Qatar and USA vs Wales, the first game of the USMNT.
The state of Florida is the second most obsessed US state about the soccer world cup in Qatar, with a total search score of 656. The sunshine state of Florida ranks number one for search terms ‘Mundial 2022’ and ‘fifa world cup qatar 2022’, placing it fourth in the ranking.
Washington, D.C. is the third state most interested in the world cup, with the first-highest number of searches for ‘World Cup Schedule’
Overall Washington, D.C. has a total search score of 632.
The state of New Jersey also ranks as one of the US states most interested in the soccer world cup, placing fourth overall. With a total search score of 621, New Jersey has the second highest proportion of its population searching for world cup related terms such as 'World Cup Soccer', placing it fourth in the ranking.
The fifth most fashion-obsessed state is Texas, with a total search score of 613. The state is the third-highest state searching for details about the 'USA vs Wales' world cup match. The state also had the second-highest number of searches in the US for 'Mundial 2022'.
New York is the sixth highest state interested with the FIFA world cup, with its population searching the second most for 'FIFA World Cup', which secured its sixth position in the rankings and gave the state a total search score of 529.
The state of Illinois gained a total soccer world cup score of 481, putting them in seventh position. The midwest state ranked fourth for the term ‘World Cup Soccer’ in the past 7 days.
The ranking reveals North Dakota, West Virginia and Mississippi as the states with least interest in the soccer world cup, with 134 as a total search score.
