US 4-0 Argentina

Yes with a PK in her last game, Alex Morgan is fully back in play.

Morgan 1 v 1 on GK is snuffed in the 6. Morgan on the wing sends one in a bit behind Rodman who connects and it glances off her head. Murphy beat off her line is saved by the cross bar on a 40 yard shot. Corner now for the US by Lavelle the GK alone boxes it out and up, the US regains it, no idea why she did not hold it. Foul and quick restart as the Argentine player react to the call, it is already in the back of the net. Horan taken down feeds the goal getter who goes near post 1-0 off the foot of Shaw, but it as her and Horan with that quick restart that got it done. Rodman gets a talking to at 11:30. Off the restart, a great looking goal is called back offside but not by much, lo siento Arg. Great pick up by the AR. Action at both ends and just 13’ in, as a steal in the center circle winds up running long and out for a GK US. Horan to a tightly marked Lavelle who is knocked off the ball, right back to Horan. From less than 30 yards DFK for Arg. Straight on shot, low is stopped by Murphy, the GK is up to cover it. Dunn far too long for Morgan and the GK has it, US wins a deep throw in, and another. Shaw with the goal and has a brace a 18’ on a first time shot off a cross from Lavelle, great team work. 19’ Morgan gets in on the goal fest, a centered ball partially blocked, she nods the cross in from near the penalty mark. The US is pressing, Arg is trying to match the speed with all movement they cannot and give up an unforced throw in. Horan drives on into the area, without a blue shirt near it. The stifling defense of the US gets them the ball back with a quickness. Arg breaks the press with a cross and the defense just shifts over picking up where they had just left off. Arg had a player down in their area as the player took a late kick at the ankle from Rodman, already spoken to by the center. US win a very deep throw. Rodman gets a player to ground then gives it away. Rodman high and wide at the top of the arc, a hopeful shot at best.  Shaw is leveled, no card as she had her feet taken out from under her. Lavelle sends it into the area, this time the GK was wise, in traffic to box the ball, she ran into a player and is holding her shin. Arg was calling for a foul that did not occur. 6’ of injury time. Kruger plays a ball to Shaw, covered then kicked and Arg gets the throw in. Nunez and Rodman getting an earful from the ref. So many balls being played by the US with a defender on them this time Horan goes down hard draws a yellow but this needs to stop here, 3 goal lead playing it with  the defender so close? Shaw with a professional foul in the last minute of extra time, no reason it was the top of the opponents area, to drag her down and risk a card? Dunn run through then landed on by the opponent.

Arg needs to keep pressing hoping to capitalize on an error, the US, find open players to not get anyone injured, just keep away from the other team and they cannot kick you. I expect subs at the half and more at the hour by the US, use the bench keep players fresh and unhurt.

Sonnett and Smith are on for Albert & Morgan. Lavelle with the first corner of the half, she plays it into the area, but it falls short of the 6. VAR is in effect due to a possible PK for tripping in the middle of the area as an off the ball foul may come back to haunt Arg. No penalty, now the ref gathers a pair of players seems she is not so sure of which two she wants? In the area an Arg player is down and the ref calls for trainers quickly, she took a ball shot, off her face, she is up, no blood, but ouch. Rodman from a poor angle gets off a great shot, wins a corner after getting the GK to full extension. Shaw with the corner to the foot of Horan, who waits then looks for Lavelle, it is headed away. Still playing the ball to the covered player and again a US player is fouled to the ground. Off the restart Rodman gets it down the wing it gets to Horan, off her body to the GK as an Arg player goes down. Shaw with a foul and a caution for persistent infringement. Great ball movement as so many players and passes go across the field just beyond the area, finally in to Horan who is stuffed on her shot due to being yes, marked. Dunn out Fox in Kruger out Neiswonger in, so a Gotham player for another.  Tripped from behind is Smith and a yellow given to Arg. From 30 yards, seeking Horan on the far post just did not work.  Horan looks to lead Smith but too much and the GK grabs it up. Shaw fouled just shy of a corner. Defended over the endline another corner, played short for Sonnett and  is headed wide but winning another corner. At 70’, Arg begins to press, are they expecting to get 3 in 20’? Neiswonger off at least one defender, almost gets herself a seeing eye goal, but it goes off the post. Her shot may have went off the arm of the first defender to make contact, near the elbow as her arms were up when she jumped to block the shot. My screen is pixelated, the clear shot has her leg nearby her arm, but yes a PK, 2nd yellow and of course the red to Mayorga. Shaw in the middle of 4 Arg players gets stepped on and pushes are exchanged as they jockey for position at the top of the area well before the kick, foolish on all.  Horan a target player all game to take the kick. Lindsey goes left as the GK, goes the same but is not high enough, 4-0 at 78’. In comes Coffey for Shaw. A smart sub protects Shaw gives her a sub alone to receive her applause and avert any cards to her as she has been spoken to and does not need to be sent off as she is on this first caution. Arg. Making 4 subs at this time. Fox beats her player bad, goes endline gets it to an of course covered Horan. 85’ Murphy goes up in a crowd comes up grabs the ball, yes, she is over 6’. Lavelle for Rodman, she nods the ball up and over the net. A shot or not by Horan, her facial expression says no, but it will count as one on the scoreboard as it hit the underside of the bar then the side netting at 89:50,  now 10’ of injury time. Another US corner has too much going on in the six and the center whistles all to a halt to address it. Only 2’ to go and the US has not stopped attacking. Jenna seeks a goal with another as the ball bounces around and she sends it on goal. Diving header by Rodman is off the mark and the last play of the night.
