The Men’s Olympic Tournament will feature 16 teams with those nations placed into four pots of four teams each, on a ranking system created according to past sporting performance. The ranking system is based on the total number of points obtained in the last five editions of the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament (three points for a win, one point for a draw, no points for a loss) covering the 2020, 2016, 2012, 2008 and 2004 Olympics.
The U.S. Men’s Olympic Team is in Pot 3 with Egypt, a yet-to-qualify country from Asia and Mali. Four berths to the Men’s Olympic Soccer Tournament are still to be determined following the completion of April’s 16-team 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Qatar and a playoff between the fourth-place finisher in that tournament taking on the fourth-place finisher from Africa, Guinea.
