USWNT First Game with Chile, First 3 Goals Facing Chile

By Sean McCaffery, September 1, 2018

Christen Press, a local product and being honored for her 100th cap gained a goal as well in this shutout victory. Stanford student athlete, Tierna Davidson headed home her first goal, off a corner ball and an own goal closed out the scoring. Stub Hub Center in Carson hosted 23,544 fans who got their first look at the first goal by the 19 year old Tierna in just her 11th game in the first 8 minutes.  Another corner was chested into the net of Chile by one of their players off a flick on by Julie Ertz. The Chilean netminder, Christiane Endler, who plies her trade in France for PSG had a good game making 9 saves on the 11 shots on goal by the ever pressing USWNT.   A foul in the box negated a well struck header by Carli Lloyd. Chile will be in the World Cup for their first time in less than 300 days, so as much as the result may have hurt, I am sure they took away many lessons, the results of which will show themselves in the rematch  on Sept. 4. The second game may be seen at 7 p.m. PT on ESPN2 & UDN as it is also on the left coast at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, this will be the last one for the USWNT in advance of qualifiers for the World Cup beginning Oct. 4 in Cary NC.
