USWNT HC Jill Ellis takeaways from the conference call

By Sean McCaffery, February 14, 2018

Washington Spirit with HC Jim Gabarra who had previously played in NY has 4 of his players on the UWMNT roster, it was asked of Ellis how that is working out. Her reply was that to have players with a past together is great and her relationship with Jim is strong they are in touch often amd having Smith, Lavelle, Sullivam & Pugh together and at times on he field together leads to better combinations. She and Gabarra play the same system of 4-3-3 making it far easier.

With thisĀ  roster having some players with limited caps what does she look for in those newer players her response was that with Savannah, Hailie & Hatch to name a few after the Jan. camp they would be more comfortable. Just being involved with the training is good for these players, allowing them to show Jill more of themselves.

Asked about Hailie, Jill answered that she can certianly fill in at training up front as she plays both there and on defense.

With the WC drawing nearer, will coach continue to tinker with the roster. Jill stated that '17 was a wider view of things and it will now narrow but a bit difficult to really solidify without a few key players out injured, Heath, Sam, Becky etc.

The new GM position to be created in the USSF was brought up to Jill, she answered very honeslty that she concerns herself with whay she can control, players etc. does not attend board meetings, and is sure a vetted person will be installed.

The inquiry as to the goalkeepers Ellis informed that she is comfortable with those in place now.

Coach Ellis feels these coming games in SheBelieves is a good thing as they are all top teams, all but the host vying for a spot in the WC.

When asked about open roster spots she told that with some starters out hurt it is not set, a better view will come after the coming games and with 3 gks and she willcarry 26 playes math will see the rest play out. But for the world cup particularly with starters she expects them to have 30 caps at minimum.

Her statement on ALex Morgan was wide ranging, she has been out a bit injured and overseas. The overseas experience is expected to have helped her. She twice mentioned Morgan having a hunger within her to succeed both in her own efforts and as a playmaker on offense.

The coach is awaiting the return of a number of players from injuries and gave a few rough timelines, Tobin was to be a total of 3-4 months, Becky is more up in the air, Rose is in camp and able to get a look see.
